After School Encore Extends the Learning at Browning

Many choices for fun with friends.

The fun at Browning doesn't stop after the last period of the day. In fact, many of our K-4 boys stay after school to participate in our extended-day program called Encore, which is designed to keep young minds and bodies engaged.

Running each school day from 3:15 to 4:45 p.m., Encore's combination sports camp/quiet study offering for Lower School boys ensures that they'll get a chance to move their bodies in team sports such as soccer or basketball, before ending the class with quiet study or free play. This semester, for the budding engineer, Encore offers two different LEGO building classes, providing an immersive experience that sets boys up for success in future STEM endeavors. In Art Around the World, boys will learn how to make a Maasai necklace, design a Greek vase, or create their own Japanese 'Koinobori' fish kite. There are also classes on wind energy and the science of the human body.

"We tailor these after-school classes to provide activities that we know will engage the boys.”

Encore classes change from semester to semester, to keep the program relevant for the many students who routinely participate in it.

“We tailor these after-school classes to provide activities that we know will engage the boys, and the program gives them the opportunity to extend their time with their friends, while staying active and participating in hands-on projects,” says Kindergarten teacher Katie Capulli, who along with Alex Falberg, a first grade teacher, directs Encore.

Boys from Kindergarten to Grade 8 also have the opportunity to take one or two hour chess classes to improve in this very popular Browning activity. Every year Browning boys compete in several regional and national chess competitions.

Music lessons are offered for every grade in the school and include instruction in piano, voice, violin, trumpet, guitar, banjo, mandolin, saxophone and french horn. Songwriting, composition, and music production are also offered.

Providing an after school outlet for boys of all ages helps Browning create community and aids our families by combining academic and after-school activities all within the same building.
